Pieces from Independence Day
Jul. 4th, 2006 11:51 pmI woke up early to a bird demanding food, which was the only reason I made it out of the house early enough for a bike ride. I rode part of the Minuteman railtrail; I'd forgotten how nice it is to cruise along without motor vehicles, enjoying the quiet. I pushed myself, ending up rather exhausted (but flying along is so wonderful); I made it almost to Lexington green and back, just over 17 miles. (I'm particularly please because my second longest ride this year was yesterday, at just under 10 miles.)
Farwing hosted a viewing of 1776, a musical about the writing of the Declaration of Independence, which was much more fascinating than I'd realized (why did I have to take so many years of American history without learning any of this backstory?). I didn't go to the reading at the Old State House (as I did last year), so this was my patriotic afternoon.
Thanks to the Electric Truffle Roommate, I have now both (a) used clipless shoes (well, sandals), which are pretty cool, and (b) ridden in a tandem recumbent tricycle (much higher coolness factor). I've never felt so close to the road. It's a little unnerving, but also a lot of fun, and rather attention-getting. I'm looking forward to another ride soon. (Without a sudden downpour, thank you.)
From the Look! Up in the Sky! category:
1. The obligatory fireworks. I caught some of them as I drove, and felt a lot of them even at my house, miles away.
2. The huge drifts of bubbles floating down from a third-story window in Inman Sq. this afternoon, delighting many, confusing others. I think there was some kind of bubble generator on a windowsill.
