Shabbat food, etc
Jun. 16th, 2006 06:45 pm- challah (all wheat flour, a mixture of white, whole wheat, and bread flours, sweetened with a little brown sugar)
- grape juice
- spring rolls (filled with mesclun, cucumber, pressed extra firm tofu, hot pepper oil-lime juice-soy sauce-sugar sauce, chives, minced carrot, and mint)
- spicy cashew noodles with scallions
- ground turkey with onion, garlic, collards, and sweet potatoes (plus hot sauce)
- curried cauliflower, potato, spinach, and chickpeas, with a touch of carrot and tomato sauce
- fruit salad (well, cut up oranges and pineapple)
- halved apricots baked with a touch of maple (though part of me keeps thinking this should have cranberry somehow, too)(eta or maybe some lime juice, instead; that would work better)
It's mostly done, two things simmering on the stove, the apricots left to do. I also need to straighten up, finish two loads of laundry, and set up guest space. I'll also note that except for some hand fruit (easily eaten) and some turnips (not sure what I want to do with them this week), plus three new potatoes, I'm out of produce, and had to buy more.
I got to the gym for the first time in ages. I felt slow on the ellipticals, but as always, lifting weights made me feel more competent.
I exchanged the wrong lightbulb I'd gotten yesterday at Tag's, and replaced one of the recessed lights. Last night I'd replaced the bulb over the stove (dead after a decade). Other lighting stuff left to do: hang the new light (not until I can move all the plants out), and perhaps figure out what the problem is with the over-sink light.
I brought empty former-flour containers back to their owner, and finally picked up most of the large sage plant she had for me. I hope I left enough roots...
I took an infant on my trip to Trader Joe's, and it didn't matter at all that I'd managed to get dirt smudges all over me, 'cause everyone was looking at the little one.
I ate a strawberry less than a minute after it was picked, still warm from the sun.
I cooked with most of the windows closed because today was the day the painters chose to return. I'm definitely in need of a second shower and third outfit.
Not done that I'd hoped to do: retrieve the framed art.
Oh, and I finally tried the Vosges Barcelona bar with which I'd been gifted. It's milk chocolate, 40% cacao, with smoked almonds and gray sea salt. Which sounded excellent, and would have been, had the salt not been so overpowering. Either the balance is seriously skewed, or most Americans eat a hell of a lot more salt than I do.

Date: 2006-06-16 11:20 pm (UTC)Mmmm... salad. Not getting lettuce other than greens, I didn't plan for salad. I've got enough left for some, though, plus some cucumber, and leftover marinated tofu. Perhaps it'll come together...

Date: 2006-06-19 12:03 pm (UTC)Strangely enough, I tried another square of this one two days later, and it was wonderful. I have to assume that hormones change how sensitive I am to certain flavors. Or something like that.

Date: 2006-06-19 05:48 am (UTC)Lots of things accomplished, infant accompaniment on errands, and fresh strawberries too -- a lovely way to bring in Shabbat.

Date: 2006-06-19 12:04 pm (UTC)The strawberries have become a recurring theme, too, having put the last of them in fruit salad, then finding a teeny-tiny one yesterday, and having strawberry-picking planned for Sunday.
