As a matter of fact, while searching for the image I used above, I came across this story (http://www.goodthink.com/writing/view_stories.cfm?id=11) from 1995: a guy named Patrick Combs received an advertisement with a "check" for $95,000 -- marked NON-NEGOTIABLE, of course -- and decided, on a lark, to deposit it at his ATM. And the bank honored it. Oops.
The details of what happened next are lengthy but amusing.
Wow. That's some story. Now I'm trying to remember whether any of the check-like objects that I've gotten in the past couple of years had signatures and such on them.
