One-third fruit again; I'm still debating whether to get all veggies next week.

  • two Anjou pears (one already eaten)
  • five bananas (rather green)
  • two tangelos (small)
  • three oranges
  • a 'hand' of ginger (It's a lot; any suggestions for recipes that use lots of ginger are appreciated.)
  • a bag of green beans (half a pound?)
  • four smallish sweet potatoes (Well, the newsletter calls them Garnet yams, but I thought we couldn't get actual yams in this country. Anyone know something about this?)
  • two little acorn squashes
  • a head of green cabbage (well, white, mostly)
  • two red onions
  • three stalks of broccoli
  • an eggplant (medium)
  • a bunch of spinach

hey, I got a sign-up thing for my farm share already. can you tell me about the share you did last year? Do you know if they're taking new members? I should decide soon.

Last year's farm share was from Red Fire Farm, with pickup Wednesdays at the Harvest Coop in Central. I don't know if they're taking new members or not; I haven't heard from them yet. I should email them.

How did they manage to deliver an already-eaten pear?

Too bad you don't have a lot of plums. You could do a big batch of ginger-plum jam.

Heh. It made sense in my own head, anyway, that one of the two pears delivered had already been eaten (by me) by the time I posted. (I didn't have much for lunch today; not enough leftovers from dinner...)

I'd need a huge amount of plums for the ratio to be right... Hm. Maybe some cranberry-ginger jam. And some orange-ginger marmalade. *ponder*

It is my understanding (and experience) that "yam" and "sweet potato" are used interchangably in the U.S. and that we do not get here what are called "yams" in Africa.

That's what I thought. Well, something close to that, anyway. I don't understand why there are both words in use for the same thing when there's something else called yam. (And I wonder why, with all the imported produce available these days, we don't get Africa-yams.)
