Ah yes, the old Mass Pike logo.

As [livejournal.com profile] ceo mentioned, that's the state seal; look for the arm holding the sword at the top, which reflects the state motto "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem". (Beats the heck out of the old "Come over and help us" bit on the original seal.)
