Somehow inspired by Tapuz's comments yesterday, I started thinking about field trips for Jewish kids in New England. Read more... )

Twenty years after part of the Green line was taken out of service, the T has decided to reflect reality and is updating maps.

Tested: watermelon-tomato-feta salad. It's a keeper, though I need to remember to use more feta. Basil works, but I'm not sure how the mint in the original recipe would play with the other flavors.

A book I was reading mentioned the horse condition fistulous withers. It's a perfect name for an old miserly man, maybe in something Dickensian.

I made soup: potato-squash-leek, which sounds like a doozy of a vegetable boxing match.

Katrina: wow. Hard to wrap my brain around it, actually. And I regret never having visited the city before; whatever it is after this will be different.

Apparently people were nervous about the safety of the Brooklyn Bridge. To show it was safe, P.T. Barnum walked all his elephants across it. For some reason, this is extremely pleasing.

I just made two trays of roasted tomatoes. The first one out of the oven was fine, tasting of tomatoes, but nothing special. The second one, however, went to a higher level, with more complex flavors, the sugars more noticeable. The only difference between the two was that the second was two cookie trays that have stuck themselves together, simulating the effect of insulated trays. I hadn't noticed before just how much of a difference it makes.
