Found

Last night I got a letter from $former_employer, about money in their 'save for shares' program, a way for employees to buy discounted shares with regular paycheck deductions. The buying, however, happens once a year, generally in August. Which means that when I left $former_employer last July, there was money in the account, which never made its way to me. The letter apologized, explaining that they were switching brokerage houses, so this got lost in the shuffle (ok, not that I'd noticed. Still, a year later?). Which means I'm getting a check for $720 sometime soon. I'm not sure if it's really 'found,' since it was money out of my paycheck, but it feels that way. What to do with it.....?

I keep telling ya' - latkes. $720 worth of latkes.

[identity profile] bitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
In this market, probably fried in crude oil would be the way to go.

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I want rude latkes, though.

[identity profile] bitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, just threaten to eat the ones that don't learn manners.

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not starting an etiquette school for latkes!

[identity profile] bitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well then eat them all and don't worry about their crudeness.

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
But what about "you are what you eat"?! Rude potatoes, I don't want to be!

[identity profile] bitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-27 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. Couch potato any better?

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-27 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
For that, I'd have to buy a TV, yes?

[identity profile] bitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-27 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, then, problem solved!

[identity profile] farwing.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I'm laughing and coughing (because I'm sick) and dude, you are way too funny.

Magid? I have no idea what you should do with the money. *waves hello*

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
*waves back*

I may be really boring and either earmark it for the IRA (not the Irish kind) or for paying down the mortgage (it's amazing how fascinating it is seeing the numbers get smaller, sort of like a car odometer in reverse).

Or find something really fun to do :-)

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Also possible. Though not quite needed as much as wanted, which might not be enough impetus. (I'm really lazy. Plus cheap. Not always a good combination...)

Okay, Bitty's latke comment, both the delivery and the content thereof, cracked me up. Thank you.

720 is a multiple of 18!

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm... 40 lives... sounds like a super-annuated cat! :-)

Probably do one of the house-repair things that you've been putting off and really want to have be done with.

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem with those is the time and organization required. I mean, yeah, the money helps, but I still have to do the comparison shopping/ find a contractor/ move stuff around so it works/ whatever. Temps in the 90s are not inspiring me to face any of it... Maybe by Thursday it'll seem doable.

[identity profile] bitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, then, buy three ACs. Solves the heat AND the spending issues.

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. The money will be gone in months with the electricity bills...

One AC should be enough for me (as I upgrade my technology to the 1960s or something :-).

[identity profile] bitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say it was practical, just effective. And cool.

[identity profile] hrafn.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, that could buy a LOT of ice cream! (Or sorbet. Your choice.)

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah.... though I'd have to figure out how to store it :-)

[identity profile] ichur72.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
WIth $720, you could get a freezer and still be able to fill it up with frozen goodies. ;)

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem being the place to put the freezer... I've been trying to figure that one out for about ten years now.

vacation! or i second the new fridge idea. i found the sexiest double-door, pull-out freezer on bottom fridge at Home Despot the other day. *drool*

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw some "french door" fridges a couple of weeks ago, and though they're very pretty, when I thought about it more, it wouldn't work for me, partly because the shape of my kitchen really makes having a door opening from one side much more useful, and partly because I'd feel I'd have to remember which side of the fridge I'd put things on.

My dream fridge is definitely a freezer on the bottom, though.

you know... there was one right next to my lust object that fits your bill. and the price is much, much closer to $720 than the one i want is.

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The ones at Sears looked vaguely affordable, too (though the friend I was shopping with ended up getting hers at Home Depot, 'cause it was on sale, or rebate, or whatever. Cheaper, anyway.).

I wish I knew why there's so much mental energy involved in getting stuff like this done. It seems reasonably easy: decide which kind to buy, have it delivered, they take the old one away (if not Freecycled). Boom, new fridge. And yet, I waffle over doing it for weeks and weeks. Stupid brain.

big money expenditures take up brain power. unless you have lots of money to toss around, which most of us don't.

if you decide you want to do this and you want moral support... i adore shopping. seriously. it's a sickness.

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! If I get moving on actual shopping, I'd love to have the company.

[identity profile] mabfan.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You could use it to set up a broadband connection to your computer.

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, a man who wants me to be on the verge of the 21st century :-).

(The question then being should I upgrade my computer too, which will more than cover the windfall, of course.)
