Cheese!

This morning I made my second of four food-acquisition-for-Arisia stops, at the Butcherie, and found new and exciting cheese! English cheese, actually, both Gloucester and Leicester. One of them is double; I don't remember which, nor do I remember the brand, but whee! Cheeses I've read about for years, and I'll finally get to taste them after the con!
(I decided it was unlikely I'd finish them at the con, and I'd rather not have to carry food home again, so after-con it is.)

Not enough sleep + con-excitement = lack of focus at work. Alas.

The Double would be Gloucester. Mmm, cheese.

Thanks. Leicester doesn't come double? And does Gloucester come single as well? And while I'm pestering you with cheese questions, would you use these cheeses as eat straight (or on crackers, etc), or cooked in things?

(They had a mild cheddar by the same people, but my splurginess ran to only two cheeses. Next time...).

Don't think so. If you have a chance to listen to the MPFC Cheese Shop sketch it will contain both of those cheeses. (Well, and cheddar too)

Is it Red Leicester? I have seen that used in a mixture with cheddar or similar for cooking because it makes a nice colorful effect.

Otherwise they would probably just be eaten with bread or crackers, or in my case in a cheese-and-pickle sandwich (pickle meaning chutney :-)

My brother likes Red Leicester and salad cream sandwiches.

I don't think it's Red Leicester.

Hmmm... I have a number of chutneys, but I'd not thought of putting them with hard cheese. My mental mouth is uncertain about it, somehow.

And what's salad cream?

Salad cream is a kind of mayonaise-like salad dressing with a more tangy flavor. Regarded as somewhat lower-class. I notice it is one of the things the 'British Shops' in the US seem to sell.

[livejournal.com profile] theora thinks it's like Miracle Whip.

Tangy mayonnaise sounds ok, but I dislike Miracle Whip. Hm. Less likely to try it, I think, than some other interesting British foods. :-)
