Local news

Three groups (the National Lawyers Guild, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and the American Friends Service Committee) are planning a lawsuit against the T's new random searches. Huzzah!
(If there were screens of all bags, like at airports, it would be more annoying for time, but would bother me less on the legal side. Not that they have the peoplepower to do that.)

David Lee Roth will be performing with the Pops on the Fourth, at the Esplanade. (Not Aerosmith, who apparently were a possibility as well.)

The MA Cultural Council budget is increasing by $1 million. It's apparently going to target "programs employing arts and culture to encourage tourism, enhance education, and foster community revitalization." Still, it doesn't bring funding up to what it used to be, before the budget lost $12 million in 2002.

Thank God! MCC is a great organization. I know people who work there. They used to have a fantastic job search web site, but it went down and as far as I know never came back up. I wonder if it had to do with the slash in their budget.

Probably. I think they had their budget slashed well over 60%, which makes it kinda hard to do much of anything and support groups enough for them to survive, even if they do their own intensive fundraising as well.

I'd much rather pay more taxes for the arts than, say (choosing a non-random example), the war in Iraq. (Yes, I know one's state, the other's federal. Still.)
