Ultimate veggies (week 20)

The last of the farm share for this year.... I wish they were offering a winter share here as well as in western MA. At least there was time for a nice chat with the guy who oversees the distribution, including hearing about his architecture classes this semester.

  • two heads of garlic
  • a pie pumpkin
  • two kohlrabis (small ones with greens, either purple or green)
  • six green peppers
  • a stalk of Brussels sprouts
  • a small head of green leaf lettuce
  • 7.5 pounds of mixed winter vegetables, including red onions (up to two), red-skinned potatoes, yellow fingerling potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, delicata squash, other winter squash, daikon, white radishes (with red insides!), black radishes, parsnips (little ones) and a variety of turnips

Plus, a Boston Organics delivery.
  • two green pears
  • two sweet potatoes
  • a small (quarter pound?) bag of shiitakes
  • a bunch of scallions
  • a zucchini
  • four stalks of broccoli
  • two oranges
  • seven bananas
  • three plums
  • eight apples

I need to remember to shift my order around, now that the farm share's done. Or perhaps I'll wait until the farmer's market ends the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

I had the thought to make preserved etrog, since the peel is the officially useful part in making preserved lemon, and etrogim have lots of that. If anyone reading this has a spare etrog, I'm happy to take it off your hands...

did you end up cooking the radishes last time and seeing how you liked them?

No... they've been languishing in my fridge. I didn't feel like experimenting with lots of people coming over. Foolish, perhaps, but this week is a lot more likely.

do you want me to mail you Seth's esrog?

I suspect it's not worth shipping, if you've got anything you'd like to do with it locally... but if not, sure, I'd be happy to take it off your hands. Thanks.
Really, I was only expecting Boston-local people to respond to that bit.

yes... well, you know I'M not going to do anything with the thing. It still makes me sneezeandsneezeandsneezeandsneeze. Ick.

So if I get un-lazy and I find myself with some time, and I can dig up your snail mail address (which is around here somewhere, I'm certain of it!), I'll send it up there, but I'm not going to stress about it if I can't find the time.

I didn't realize you're allergic to them. Do other citrus bother you like this? (I know about cantaloupe.)

What are those fruits that are like grapfruits, but sweeter, with a lot more rind? Pomelos or something? Those make me sneeze while I'm peeling them. But not as badly. Really, it's just the citron. Which means Citronella candles are RIGHT OUT.

Suffice it to say, I do NOT go to shul on Succos.

I have a friend who's allergic to ALL citrus, which is a darned shame.

Canteloupe doesn't make me sneeze, but it does give me a nasty migraine. Sometimes I eat it anyway.
